NBC Bans Some Nigerian Videos
Reports indicated on Thursday that artistes whose works are affected by the action include Psquare, Wande Coal, Timaya, Flavour and D’Prince. The others are Goldie, Chuddy K and Tillaman.
The videos were banned for containing erotic lyrics and scenes, promoting nudity and for showcasing what the NBC describes as suggestive dance steps.
The offending videos, according to the commission, are listed as Psquare’s Alingo, Wande Coal’s Go low, Timaya’s Bum bum, Flavour’s Shake and D’Prince’s Take banana.
Goldie’s Ski bobo and Chuddy K’s Brazilian Hair came under NBC’s axe for featuring minors and exposing them to indecent dance steps. Tillaman’s Koma Roll was not exempted.
Although most of the artistes have not reacted to the ban, there is an indication it may have little or no effect on the affected works, in terms of reception from the viewing public, distribution and sales.
However, a spokesman for Psquare, Bayo Adetu, has described the ban as an unnecessary and unjustifiable action.
As a major regulatory body, the NBC keeps close watch on the contents of music videos and audio CDs broadcast by Nigerian television and radio stations.
In the past, the body had cause to officially kick out Afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti’s wave-making song Bang Bang Bang and Konga’s Baby konga from the air space. Quite recently, the commission had to flex its muscles when DJ Zeez’s Body Language fell short of its expectations.
Due to the public holiday on Thursday, a lady who works with the Public Affairs unit of the NBC was unable to confirm the ban when the PUNCH sought the reaction of the commission.
But the NBC official, Hajia Maimuna Jimada, said the list of banned works and affected artistes was subject to regular quarterly reviews at the commission.
Banned
Tillaman ft. Vector- Koma Roll (contains erotic and suggestive dance steps)
Wande Coal – Go Low (scenes of nudity in the video)
D’Prince – Take Banana (contains erotic, vulgar words and suggestive dance styles)
Flavour – Shake (vulgar and suggestive dance steps)
Goldie – Ski Bobo (featuring a minor with suggestive and immoral dance steps)
Chuddy K – Brazilian Hair (features children and ladies with suggestive and erotic dance steps)
Timaya – Shake your Bum Bum erotic and suggestive dance steps with vulgar lyrics.
Psquare – Alingo (erotic scenes at the end of the musical videos).
If the ban stays, the consolation for the artistes is that the NBC does not regulate what is broadcast on cable channels such as MTV Base, Soundcity, Trace and Channel O, as well as Internet platforms like Youtube and Vimeo.
Pastor Arrested, Charged Over 492 Fake Marriages
A vicar has been charged with presiding over 492 fake marriages in 16 months - equivalent to one a day.
Reverend Nathan Ntege was arrested in June last year following an investigation into sham marriages by the UK Border Agency.
The 53-year-old is accused of conducting a string of fake marriages at the St Jude's with St Aidan Church in Thornton Heath, south London, between December 2009 and March 2011.
Ntege has been charged with 14 immigration offences, including one offence of conspiracy to facilitate unlawful immigration and 13 charges of assisting illegal entry in relation to 492 marriages held at his church.
It is believed the border agency's Criminal and Financial Investigation Unit started investigating after a tip off about the vast number of marriages conducted at the church.
Ntege, who is originally from Uganda but lives in Croydon, appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court on Wednesday along with his 79-year-old verger, Brian Miller, of Selsdon, south London, who faces the same charges.
The pair spoke only to confirm their names and were bailed ahead of a hearing at Croydon Crown Court on Friday.
Gilena Petkova, 50, has also been charged in relation to the alleged offences. She is accused of being a 'fixer' for fake weddings and was allegedly married in a sham service.
Petkova has been charged with conspiracy and five charges of assisting illegal entry and is due to appear at Camberwell Green JPs on February 7.
Claire Holder, a lawyer for the Crown Prosecution Service, said last week there was 'sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest' to prosecute the three.
Ntege was bailed on condition that he does not attend St Jude's, officiate at a religious building or service and or apply for travel documents.
He was suspended by the Diocese of Southwark when he was arrested last year, pending the outcome of the case.
In 2010 Reverend Alex Brown was jailed for conducting 360 fake weddings in Hastings in a case the CPS described as the 'biggest sham marriage case it had seen'.
When 50 Cent Is Your Boss
Brian Nohe, a former executive at Gillette (PG) and a self-described garage band musician, was running a small company in Delray Beach, Fla., that made headphones and earbuds for kids when he got a call from 50 Cent.
The rapper and businessman (also known as Curtis Jackson) had—like just about everyone else—noticed the success of Beats by Dr. Dre and had decided he wanted to get into the business. He ended up buying a majority stake of Nohe’s company in September, renamed it SMS Audio, and made himself chief executive. The company sells headphones for all ages now: Sync by 50 wireless headphones go for about $400 and the Street by 50 wired sets cost about $250. The company has 25 employees and sells headphones in 30 countries. Nohe spoke with me over the phone about what it’s like when 50 is the boss.
- What did you know of Jackson when he approached you? I knew of 50 as an artist, but his music isn’t what I’m used to listening to. I wanted to understand who he was as a person. My reputation is valuable to me. I tell everyone that there are three things critical to me: ethics, community, and family. I asked him, ‘What are your ethics?’ We were completely simpatico. He is straight-up. There are no curves with 50.
- How do you resolve disagreements? He’s got a good sense of himself. He hires good people, leaves them alone to do their job and gets involved when he thinks it’s appropriate. He has good ideas about design and sound. But if he came to talk to me about HR issues, I’d be surprised. …We haven’t had that many disagreements. But I didn’t get to where I am today without knowing that when the boss says he wants to do it this way, you do it that way. But he respects me.
- What’s hard about working for a celebrity? It’s a challenge to get him to focus. He’s got a new album breaking in November and he’ll be on tour around the world. How do we latch on to that? Then there are four other people running different businesses and projects who are asking the same thing. He’s beginning to realize he needs to put more emphasis on navigating all this. … It would be a good thing to have more of a corporate structure around him.
- What’s the strangest thing about working for 50 compared to, say, an executive at Gillette? At Gillette and in other jobs, I’ve run into a lot of celebrities. I’m not quite as star-struck. I’m 60. I’m thinking: “You’ve had a great career, good for you. Let’s make this work and make some money.”
- Do you always call him 50? It depends on the circumstances. Most people call him 50 or Fiddy if they know him. But in a business meeting—especially if we’re out of the country—I’ll call him Curtis or Mr. Jackson. It’s a courtesy. But everyone always asks what to call him.
A businessman who lost his nose to skin cancer is having a new one grown in his arm using stem cells, in a pioneering procedure.
Experts at University College London say the new nose will look exactly the same as the man's original one, and hope it will even have a sense of smell.
The trial marks the first time a full nose has been grown from scratch, and could in future be used as a therapy for patients such as soldiers and car crash victims, the Daily Mail reported.
The first stage of the process was to create a glass mould of the unnamed man's nose, and to spray it with a honeycomb-like material to form a biological scaffold for new cells to attach themselves to.

Once the scaffold had been built, the glass mould was removed and the biological frame was coated with millions of stem cells which can be coaxed into forming cartilage using chemicals.
At the same time, researchers inserted a small balloon beneath the surface of the man's arm and gradually inflated it to stretch the skin, making it loose enough to accommodate the new nose.
Professor Alex Seifalian, who is leading the experiment, said the man's nose has been designed to look exactly like the original – slightly crooked.

How to Hide Your Facebook Friends List
With the recent changes to Facebook's privacy settings came the decision
to open up a user's friends list to anyone who visited their profile.
After a hue and cry from Facebook users and advocacy groups, Facebook
relented and provided a way to hide the friends list. Unfortunately,
they didn't make it altogether easy to find out how to hide your
Facebook friends list.

Don't bother looking in the privacy settings. For some reason, Facebook decided to bury the setting in the profile itself.
HOW TO HIDE YOUR FACEBOOK FRIENDS LIST
1. To hide your Facebook friends list, Go to your profile page and locate the Friends box in the left column.
2. There is a small icon of a pencil in the upper right-hand corner of the friends box that will open a small window containing the settings. Simply uncheck the box marked Show my friends on my profile and your friends list will no longer show up to visitors.
